Author Spotlight: Gabrielle Zevin

May 21, 2010

One of my favorite authors of all time is Gabrielle Zevin. I have read two of her teen novels, Elsewhere and Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac, multiple times. If there is such a thing as a perfect book, it would be one of hers. Zevin's novels have all the right elements to them-romance, action, excitement, sadness, and humor. They are deep, and beautifully written, and have helped me through some hard times. Elsewhere is about a 15-year-old girl, Liz, who died in a car accident, and goes to heaven, which is called "Elsewhere". Liz has to deal with her death, and can't give up. It is my all-time favorite book. Next, Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac is a thrilling story about a girl named Naomi, who loses her memory after a mysterious accident. She doesn't remember anything about her best friend, her boyfriend, or her parent's divorce. Will Naomi ever recall her life again?

Recently, I interviewed Ms. Gabrielle Zevin. Here it is:

Meera: Do you have any future projects for teens that are coming out?
Gabrielle: Yes, I have a new book for older teens coming out next fall called ALL THESE THINGS THAT I’VE DONE.
M: Will you write a prequel/sequel to Elsewhere, as you said on your website?
G: Alas, not yet! I did complete work on an ELSEWHERE screenplay though I can’t say more about that just yet.
M: What inspired you to write Elsewhere?
G: All my books have started with a question that I was asking myself at the time. For ELSEWHERE, my question was, How does a person live and be happy in the world when it is inevitably filled with so much loss?
M: What was the longest amount of time it took you to write a book?
G: There are some books I think about for years and years before I start to write them. But the physical writing of a book has never taken me more than a year, I’d guess.
M: Out of all your books, do you have one in particular that you feel close to?
G: Truthfully, I feel closest to the book I’m writing at the time. It’s weird because once I’m done with a book and it’s published, I almost feel like a different person wrote it.
M: Thank you so much for your time!
G: You are very welcome!
