Alexander McQueen: A True Visionary

Feb 10, 2011

"Fashions come and go, but style is forever."-Yves Saint Laurent
It was a while ago when I first read this quote. And upon reading it, I realized something. I was getting caught up in a whirlwind of trying to know what the latest accessory or the hottest new trend was, instead of having my own style. The world of fashion is utterly glamourous-the runways, the celebrities, and the overall excitement of this industry allures many. But I've realized that, while fashion is captivating, it tends to move on-as Marc Jacobs has said, "…This is fashion. Things change." This leads me back to my opening quote-style is forever.
It is rare, for me, to find a collection that is truly style, and more. But there is such a collection that-to my eye-is described as magnificent. It holds a strong yet simple sort of beauty to it. This collection is Alexander McQueen's Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear line. Each outfit was mesmerizing-because it actually held some meaning. There was no fluff to it, because the clothes didn't have to be flashy to be noticed. The designer stated, "There is no better designer than nature." He took nature and transported it to his clothes. There was also another element in the collection-McQueen's vision seemed unlike any others. I have never before seen a collection that enraptures its audience like McQueen's final line did. Sarah Burton, the new Creative Director of the label, said of the collection, "He was looking at the art of the dark ages, but finding light and beauty in it." Her words emphasize the clothes' beauty furthermore, and secures McQueen's long lasting impression as a visionary. The designer himself said, "Clothes and jewellery should be startling, individual." Individuality and style go hand in hand, and I believe the one person who knew that was Alexander McQueen.
Alexander McQueen was able to create clothes that both dazzles the fashion industry, and transports us to the magic of the Dark Ages, worlds that we can only dream of. That is what is true style, style that lasts forever.
Alexander McQueen is more than that, though, he was beyond style and fashion. The designer left school at age 16, and after a series of incredible sartorial internships, he joined a postgraduate course at Central St. Martin's College of Art and Design. The designer completely took off. Isabella Blow told Time Out, "His influence is monumental." Sarah Burton, McQueen's successor, told Vogue UK in a groundbreaking interview, "At the factories in Italy, I understood how many people he touched. There were little ladies on sewing machines, crying. Some remembered him as a young lad..." Burton also told the magazine, "Lee was larger than life and you just don't imagine anyone like that going...".
McQueen's death put on the fashion world on hold, even the entire world on hold. He had left a stamp on this earth, one of a person no would ever forget, one who would forever be known as a fashion legend, an iconic artistic, a lifelong friend, a world visionary. Kristin Knox, author of Alexander McQueen: Genius of a Generation, certainly thinks so, as the writer/blogger said, "His was the kind of genius that only comes around once in a generation." Alexander McQueen's death was the kind of tragedy that shook millions of hearts- friends, family, colleagues, and fans.
To end a tribute like this, I am not sure of what I should say. How can I describe the legendary designer? Do I begin at how each of his collections are unforgettably beautiful? How Lady Gaga dedicated her 2010 Brit Awards performance to him? How he brought art to fashion, and fashion to art, designing as honestly and sincerely as he was? Or should I quote the most famous fashionistas in the world as they mourn his death? Madonna said, "Lee McQueen was a  truly unique visionary in the world of fashion. A creator of beauty. What a tragedy." Alexander McQueen was just that-a creator of beauty, who will always go down in history of being the visionary that he was.
