Blogger Spotlight: Diana Janec

Aug 2, 2012

This month, for the Blogger Spotlight feature, one of my favorite bloggers shares her fashion and lifestyle secrets. Diana Janec, the blogger behind Dressed Up Alligators, has always had an incredible sense of style - one that I have admired for months. Diana effortlessly mixes prints, combines quirky accessories, and eye-popping candy colors into every outfit. Her photographs beautifully capture each detail of her ensembles. Anyone who adores fashion will adore Diana's delightful personal style and her lovely blog. The blogger has been featured all across renowned publications and websites such as Teen Vogue, Rue La La, Glamour, and Lucky. To discover her style and blogging tips and must-haves of the season,  read on...

1. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

There are so many places in the world I want to explore, so I think I would want to live out of a backpack for a year or two and just travel. Otherwise, I’d love to live in a small flat somewhere overlooking the Mediterranean Sea – or even tucked away in Venice or hidden in Switzerland’s mountainside, but close enough to city-life.

2. Dream wedding dress designer?

With all the wedding shows I watch (cc. Say Yes to the Dress) you’d think I’d know all of the designers by heart. I honestly don’t have a dream designer – I just want something classic and simple. I do love Vera Wang, Marchesa and even JCrew’s bridal line though.
3. What is one beauty item you could not live without?

Mascara! When I don’t have much time, this is all I throw on. I don’t know what I would do without it! I love Lancome Hypnose (when I want to splurge), or L’Oreal’s Voluminous Mascara.

4. What is the worst trend to have taken the fashion world by storm?

I hate jumpsuits. That and harem pants.

5. What is your favorite F/W 2012 trend?

I love that the all-white look is continuing on to fall/winter. It looks so cozy with those crisp knits. Also I’ve noticed a lot of deep burgundy/blood red pieces floating around – I hope that will be the color of the season, its gorgeous.
6. Favorite high-street stores?

One store I can’t help myself from is JCrew – I would literally buy everything there if I could. But I also love Zara, Club Monaco, Madewell, Anthropologie (for home décor), ASOS, Marc by Marc Jacobs, H&M, Lily Pulitzer, Kate Spade…I do a lot of window shopping.

7. What inspired you to start blogging?

Before I started blogging I would spend hours studying magazines and in my closet picking out outfits and trying to create new looks. I would always think of ways I would style a look from an editorial instead, or what I would rather see in Teen Vogue, Seventeen or Marie Claire. When I stumbled upon fashion blogs (the first ones I found were Sea of Shoes and Cupcakes and Cashmere) I totally fell in love. I really liked how frequently they were updated (rather than waiting for a once-a-month issue). They were like mini-magazines for me – but more personal and relatable.

I had toyed around with the idea of making my own and it actually happened one summer when I had nothing to do. I wanted to start creating a portfolio I could use later on when applying for jobs in fashion, so I took the plunge and made one!
8. Favorite fashion/personal style blogs?

I gravitate towards bloggers that look at fashion through a different lens and create outfits and pictures I would have never thought of while staying true to their personal style. I love Sandra from 5 Inch and Up – she is always, always doing something inspiring. I am also reading Tuula, Gary Pepper Vintage, Atlantic-Pacific, Park & Cube, The Beauty Department, Love Aesthetics, Classy Girls Wear Pearls, Late Afternoon, Vasilieva, Oracle Fox, Cherry Blossom Girl, Song of Style, Sincerely Jules, and We Wore What.

9. What is your advice for new fashion bloggers?

Try not to compare yourself to anyone! I will sometimes find myself doing this when I feel uninspired and it just makes everything worse – it’s seriously deadly. Stay true to your own style, even if you feel discouraged, and blog for yourself. Remember that everyone starts small, and numbers aren’t everything. Put your best work out there – if you are proud of your blog and love what you create other people will follow. I can’t begin to count how many times I’ve rejected a post because it wasn’t perfect. Also, I think it’s important to be fearless. Experiment with different perspectives, looks and create stories that are fun to look at. I find that these are the posts I remember most from my favorite bloggers.

10. Who is your style icon?

Olivia Palermo is impossibly chic. She always looks pulled together and lady-like – probably my favorite celebrity style-wise.

Thank you so much, Diana, for participating in this feature! Your answers are incredibly insppiring and you evidently have a covetable wardrobe!
