"Don't judge a book by its cover" is an overly known and used phrase that is applicable to numerable situations – but not when it comes to fashion magazines. In fashion, the gleaming cover of the magazine is much more important than the content inside; the cover sets the scene, mood, and feel of every issue. The cover is generally the prompting factor for people to purchase the issue at the newsstand or bookstore. This year, as I scrolled through Fashion Gone Rogue to find the best covers of the year, there were honestly way too many choices. From the classic American editions of all the magazines to the incredible and innumerable international versions, hundreds of options could have been recognized and awarded. But which covers made the cut? Here are some highlights among the nine choices above:
- Harper's Bazaar España: There is a certain movement in this cover – I absolutely love how the model is shown tearing off the wall behind her. This is an interesting concept, and perfect for the magazine's art issue.
- WSJ Magazine: Marion Cotillard graced multiple magazine covers this year, and she managed to look beautiful on all of them. This was, by far, her best cover. It held a certain dark beauty, with bold lips and a stunning black dress completing the look and the mood. WSJ Magazine is one of my absolute favorites, as is combines fashion with journalism and human interest stories. Their cover stories are always amazing and this was one of my favorites.
- Vogue España: Two small words could sum up why this cover is so perfect: Kate Moss. With impeccable makeup – and those beautiful green eyes – Kate made this cover what it is. Another winning aspect of the cover was the close-up shot. Unlike most other magazines, this photograph focuses just on the model itself, not the clothes, too.
- Vogue India: Deepika Padukone is one of Bollywood's most amazing actresses today (in my opinion) and is sparkling on the cover of Vogue India. This version of Vogue has always been my favorite and every cover the magazine released this year has been flawless. As this was a issue during the summer, the swimsuit was the perfect outfit for Deepika to don.
With nine choices above, and countless others, what was your favorite cover of 2012?
