Singapore: my current home, a glistening metropolitan, and a place where fashion is on the rise. Over the past three years, I've discovered just how fascinating the evolution of fashion in Singapore is, and the talent here is seeping out of every store and boutique across the island. In the spirit of Singapore's rise in the fashion world, I am starting the latest segment on my blog: Career Month. For every week of this month, I have an exclusive interview with people in Singapore who are fueling the country's talent in this industry. The line-up includes a makeup-artist, photographer, model, editor and designer. Get ready for some truly inspiring quotes and stories from some of the most talented people on this little island.
In the first of my Career Month posts, designer Eve Tan reveals how her designs, which intertwine simplicity and some serious style, have gotten her recognition from across the globe.
1. How did you launch your career as a fashion designer?
When I took up a Fashion Degree, I always knew one day I will start my own label as a way to reach out to people with my ideas. After graduation, I've heard about the Fashion Design Incubator program and was qualified for the YES! funding by Spring. I interviewed for it and the rest is history.
2. What is one of the proudest moments in your career?
When I was participating in Isetan Scott's fashion week in 2012, a customer returned in the same week to purchase more of my designs. Her daughter came up to me and thanked me for allowing her mom to be comfortable and stylish while she was going through chemotherapy in Singapore. This has got to be the proudest moment so far.
3. How did being including in Parco Next's 2012 Designers affect your career?
Parco Next Next's fashion incubator program was great because of their mentorship program. I was assigned wonderful mentors who are so generous with their help. I guess without them, I would have made a lot more mistakes. It definitely speed up the learning process.
4. What is the inspiration behind your latest collection?
It was inspired by a fantasy garden. I do not usually have many colours in my collection, but I had a dream of a beautiful garden filled with pastel flowers. It was really quiet and zen. I felt strongly moved by the silence, the simplicity and the peace of it all and so my SS13 was born.
5. Are there any specific places you go to gain inspiration for work?
I get inspiration anywhere. I usually get my inspiration from emotions. When something stirs up something in me, be it a story, a song, a painting or just nature's magnificence, I immerse myself in it and create designs to express the emotions.
6. Is a particular characteristic you believe your clothes have?
It's the perfect balance of style and comfort.
7. Do you have any exciting pieces of news or collaborations coming up in the future?
An art + design store is in planning. It's an exciting project we're embarking on. Do stay tuned to our facebook page for updates!
8. If you were not a fashion designer, what career would you pursue?
I would have been a mortician. I know it's strange, but I think it's such a noble job.
9. What educational background helped you to pursue a career in fashion?
I studied in Raffles Design Institute Singapore, Bachelor of Arts, Fashion Design.
10. What advice do you have for aspiring designers in Singapore?
Be yourself and have a vision so strong that it not only pushes you, it pulls you out of bed every morning.
Stay tuned for some more Career Month posts, coming up all of July! What do you think of Eve's beautiful designs?
