leather by rumi neely.

Oct 23, 2013

Rumi Neely of fashiontoast, who could easily be crowned as one of the most prominent and successful fashion bloggers at the moment, consistently channels the ideal New-Yorker, biker-chic look with each of her impeccable ensembles. The elements which are never missing from her stream of outfit posts are minimalistic color schemes, cat-eye makeup, killer stilettos, and, now more than ever – leather. Browsing through her website on lazy afternoons made me realize immediately that she was taking inspiration from the bold Spring runways – on which leather had an undeniable presence – and placed her own trademark style on leather looks. Leather seems to have become a staple in her closet, from the chic clutch to the androgynous jacket. More than emphasizing its versatility, Rumi manages to style leather to perfection for any season, as you find from her addictive summer travel diaries to the fashion week outfit posts. Who could be better than Rumi to show us how to wear leather on an everyday basis? This post, in a less-than-laconic fashion, illustrates just how to do so. Read on to discover the best ways to incorporate the fabric in subtle – or bold, depending on your preference – ways, with a distinctly Rumi touch.

1. The Jacket: Personally, a leather jacket is a difficult item to style, but that is almost entirely due to the fact that Singapore offers very few opportunities to wear clothing for cold weather. A leather jacket is ideal for Fall and Winter, but hopefully I'll get the chance one day. The jackets above are suitable for a variety of occasions, and show versatility in structure and color. From the fire-engine red concoction to the sleek cream option, leather jackets are dominating the fall collections of all major high-street brands, which offers ample opportunity to experiment with the look. All items are linked here.

2. The Skirt: Perhaps the easiest way to integrate this trend is to slip on a leather skirt. Unlike leather jackets, which evoke a tougher overall image, leather skirts hold a sort of elegance to them, which is something like people like me always look for in clothing. Skater skirts, enveloped in leather, do the trick for an edgier ensemble, while a plethora of pencil skirts are alternatives. All items are linked here.
3. The Accessories: The perfect way to wear leather is to do so through accessories. When wearing any sort of ensemble, for a formal event or even day-wear, use leather heels, bags and even belts to your advantage. While leather bags are evergreen in their trendiness, leather shoes are slightly more new to the fashion scene. Black pumps with a touch of leather are ideal for bringing leather glamour to anyone's outfit. All items are linked here.

Leather, as a trend, can be an enigma when it comes to styling. We can approach it in an oblique manner, by tackling the details – the jackets, the skirts, the accessories – and center our outfit around the one statement piece. Taking a note from Rumi's enviable leather outfits, go for simplicity but don't abandon the chance to create an eye-catching look.

  5. Great collection of leather items here in different colours! Love the leather trend. Kinda rock yet can be dressy as well. Definitely a highlight of fashion in 2013. Any thoughts if it will continue into 2014? I recently wrote a blogpost about the leather trend in 2013. Would be great if you can comment on it :D http://dressi.ly/2013-fashion-review/
