I'm writing this post on my last morning in New York, with last-minute shopping and packing yet to be done. We've had an amazing month, to say the least, in the city. A major highlight was the reunions with old friends, among them being some we hadn't seen in almost eight years. The other important aspect of the trip was my internship over the course of this month, at a global human-right organization, Breakthrough. The work was eye-opening to me in ways that would take almost an entire post to describe, with my responsibilities ranging from social media updates to curating stories from across the internet about gender-based norms. Speaking of – if you have a story, about gender norms and being held back because of them, learn more about Breakthrough's exciting new storytelling project here. In addition to my internship, I was lucky enough to have plenty of time to enjoy the city I was residing in. It was strange at first to reacquaint myself with New York, considering my family left it eight years ago. 'Home' wouldn't be a term I would use to describe it, but I found familiarity on almost every street, and a strong sort of nostalgia could be attributed to the city – I found it whether we were walking along Central Park or revisiting our favourite cafés in the Village. Needless to say, it was a month of powerful and plentiful ups and very few downs.

In what is a connection to reconnecting to the city, this outfit post was shot by my friend (and my sister's best friend!) Zayira, one of the people who I hadn't met in an insanely long time. Zayira runs a beautiful photography Tumblr, which you should check out here, with photos that are both powerful and simplistic in their execution. The three of us spent a lovely afternoon down in my ultimate-favourite neighbourhood downtown – Soho. With red-brick walls and cobbled pavements more reminiscent of London streets than anything else, Soho is a charming balance of high-end shopping and New York authenticity. We walked around for almost hours, grabbing cups of iced coffee along the way, and shooting in whatever backdrop we found best. I was excited to feature my latest New York purchases, the Michael Kors bag being my closet essential. I haven't missed an opportunity to bring it out of the house, with it's relatively large size and neutral tone making it versatile enough. It was the perfect carry-on for my summer look – the crop-top dappled with flowers and cotton shorts ideal for a sun-soaked day. Cotton shorts are a new favourite of mine – light and easy, they've become a brand staple. I bought multiple Brandy Melville versions, but this French Connection one was by far the most comfy and easy to style. One of the best Soho discoveries was And Other Stories – a gorgeous boutique with a minimal approach to pastels and prints, with plenty of beauty products and jewelry to top it off. My rings from the brand will be sure to make several appearances in upcoming outfit posts.
